The Lion of the Tribe of Judah
Revelation 5:5 answers John’s weeping with a royal announcement: the Lion of the tribe of Judah and Root of David has prevailed. The titles draw from the Bible’s Judah and Davidic messianic promises. Yet when John turns, he sees a Lamb standing as slain, so Revelation defines the victorious royal Messiah through sacrificial death and resurrection life.
Revelation 5:5–7 deliberately moves from what John hears—the Lion of Judah and Root of David—to what he sees—a Lamb standing as though slain. Royal Messiah and sacrificial Lamb are not competing identities but one person. The Lamb’s victory qualifies Him to take the scroll and advance God’s purposes.
Revelation calls Jesus “the Lion of the tribe of Juda,” strongly recalling the lion imagery attached to Judah in Genesis 49. The patriarchal royal image is therefore carried forward explicitly into Revelation’s Christological portrait of the victorious Messiah.
Revelation’s victorious Lion of Judah and Root of David carry the Davidic royal line to its final messianic horizon. First Samuel 16 supplies the historical beginning of David’s anointed kingship, while Revelation identifies Jesus as the climactic Davidic ruler. The connection is canonical promise development, not a quotation of the anointing scene.
Revelation presents the conquering Messiah as the Lion of Judah and the Root of David, carrying the covenant promise of David’s enduring royal line into the throne-room vision. The title is explicitly Davidic, though Revelation does not quote 2 Samuel 7 verbatim.
