God Gives More Grace to the Humble
James answers human envy and divided loyalty with greater grace and then quotes Proverbs 3:34: God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble. That proverb becomes a chain of imperatives—submit to God, resist the devil, draw near to God, cleanse hands, purify hearts, mourn, and humble yourselves. God’s promised response is equally active: the devil will flee, God will draw near, and the Lord will lift up the humbled person.
Where this fits in the story: the call to cleanse hands and purify hearts echoes worship and repentance language from Psalms and prophets. The reversal “humble yourselves… and he shall lift you up” resonates strongly with Jesus’ teaching that self-exaltation leads to humiliation and self-humbling to exaltation.
