The Word of the Cross: God’s Wisdom in Apparent Folly
The cross divides two ways of seeing reality. To those who are perishing it looks foolish; to those being saved it displays God’s power. Paul quotes Isaiah 29:14—God will destroy the wisdom of the wise—to show that God has long opposed human confidence that tries to master him on human terms. Jews ask for signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but the apostolic message announces a crucified Messiah.
That claim sounded scandalous in the ancient world. Crucifixion was a shameful Roman execution, while “Messiah” carried royal hopes. Paul does not solve the tension by making the cross look respectable. He says the very thing people dismiss becomes God’s wisdom and power.
