Reuben’s Lost Birthright and Eastern Settlements
Reuben was Jacob’s firstborn, but Chronicles explicitly explains that his sexual offense cost him the birthright, which passed to Joseph’s sons. Yet Judah became preeminent and produced the ruler. This is inspired interpretation of earlier Genesis events, not merely a later family rumor. The section then follows Reuben’s descendants and settlements east of the Jordan. The opening verses are especially important for the Bible’s royal storyline because they distinguish birthright privilege from the ruler who comes through Judah.
