The Jew, the Law, and Circumcision of the Heart
Paul addresses the person who bears the name Jew, rests in the law, and boasts in God. Torah is genuinely a gift, but privilege increases accountability when teaching and practice diverge. Israel’s failure can cause God’s name to be blasphemed among the nations, and Paul explicitly quotes Isaiah 52:5 to make that charge.
He then distinguishes outward circumcision from the inward reality it signifies. True circumcision is “of the heart, in the spirit,” language that develops the Torah’s own heart-circumcision trajectory in Deuteronomy. Paul is not mocking Jewish identity; he is pressing covenant signs toward the obedience and transformed heart they were meant to mark.
