A Call to Return with Sincerity
The chapter opens with an urgent call to return without pretense. Israel must put away idols and live in truth, judgment, and righteousness. Jeremiah then turns circumcision into a heart image: covenant faithfulness must reach inward, not remain merely an outward sign.
Jeremiah 4:4 calls for circumcision of the heart, shifting covenant-sign language toward inward obedience; Colossians 2:11 describes a circumcision made without hands in Christ. The relationship is a strong inward-covenant trajectory, not a direct quotation of Jeremiah.
Jeremiah tells Judah to circumcise themselves to YHWH and remove the foreskins of the heart, directly developing Deuteronomy’s inner-covenant metaphor. The prophet makes inward loyalty the urgent repentance issue.
Jeremiah 4:4 commands Judah to “circumcise” the heart, supplying the prophetic side of the Old Testament trajectory behind Philippians 3:3’s Spirit-defined covenant identity and rejection of confidence in the flesh.
