Balaam’s Donkey Sees the Angel and Speaks
On the road, the angel of YHWH stands as an adversary. Balaam’s donkey sees the angel three times while the professional seer does not; after Balaam beats the animal, YHWH opens the donkey’s mouth and then Balaam’s eyes. Second Peter later explicitly remembers the speaking donkey as a rebuke of Balaam’s madness.
Peter explicitly names Balaam son of Bosor/Beor and recalls the speaking donkey that rebuked the prophet’s madness, directly recalling Numbers 22. The named donkey episode makes the reference unmistakably narrative-specific rather than a generic warning about greedy prophets.
