Love without Hypocrisy and Good that Overcomes Evil
Paul compresses Christian ethics into a rapid series of commands: genuine love, hatred of evil, honor, diligence, hope, patience, prayer, generosity, hospitality, blessing persecutors, empathy, humility, and peaceful conduct. The instructions are not random; they portray a community whose behavior answers God’s mercy.
The ending is saturated with Israel’s wisdom and Torah. Proverbs 20 warns against personally repaying evil; Deuteronomy 32 reserves vengeance to God; Proverbs 25:21–22 is quoted directly—feed a hungry enemy and give drink to a thirsty one. Paul’s final summary is therefore deeply scriptural: do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.
