Twelve Tribes, One Burial Place — Jacob Dies Facing the Promise
Genesis now names Jacob’s sons collectively as “the twelve tribes of Israel,” showing the family becoming the tribal people that will dominate the rest of the Old Testament story. Jacob’s final command again concerns burial: he must be placed in Machpelah with Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebekah, and Leah, on the field Abraham purchased from Ephron. Even in Egypt, the family’s burial geography remains tied to Canaan and to the promise. Genesis 50 will explicitly fulfill this command, and Acts 7 later remembers Jacob’s death in Egypt. The phrase “gathered unto his people” belongs to biblical death language and may imply more than the physical act of burial, but this verse alone should not be made to carry a fully developed doctrine of resurrection or the intermediate state. Jacob dies in Egypt while pointing his sons back toward the promised land.
