Wisdom Cries in the Streets
Wisdom is pictured as a woman raising her voice in the most public places of the city. She is not hidden knowledge for an elite; she calls the simple, the mocker, and the fool to turn at her reproof. The warning intensifies because repeated refusal has consequences: a life can become so formed by rejected counsel that calamity exposes what the hearer has chosen.
Coming Savior connection: Proverbs 1:23 is not a direct prediction that Jesus will later send the Holy Spirit. In the poem, personified Wisdom promises to pour out her spirit and make her words known to those who turn at her correction. Christian readers can hear a broad canonical resonance with the New Testament’s presentation of Christ as God’s wisdom and with Jesus’ promise to send the Spirit, but John 16 does not quote Proverbs 1:23. This is a wisdom-and-Spirit trajectory, not an explicit messianic prophecy.
