Taught by God to Love: Quiet Work and Public Witness
The Thessalonians are “taught of God” to love one another, and Paul recognizes that their love already reaches believers across Macedonia. Yet again he says to increase. He pairs that love with a surprising ambition: live quietly, mind your own affairs, work with your hands, and walk honorably toward outsiders.
Where this fits in the story: love of neighbor is rooted in Israel’s Scriptures and intensified in Jesus’ command that his disciples love one another. The work instruction will become even more explicit in 2 Thessalonians 3. Paul’s own night-and-day labor in 2:9 makes the command embodied rather than theoretical.
