Timothy Sent into Affliction: Stand Fast against the Tempter
Unable to bear the uncertainty, Paul remains in Athens and sends Timothy to strengthen and encourage the Thessalonians. Their afflictions are not evidence that the gospel has failed; Paul says suffering had been expected. His concern is that “the tempter” might exploit the pressure and empty their labor of its fruit.
Where this fits in the story: Jesus prepares disciples for opposition, Acts repeatedly shows the gospel advancing through tribulation, and Paul elsewhere tells new believers that entering God’s kingdom involves many afflictions. The tempter language also belongs to the canon’s wider adversary pattern.
