Philistia Judged, Judah’s Remnant Given Rest
Zephaniah turns west toward Philistia and names Gaza, Ashkelon, Ashdod, and Ekron. In Hebrew, the oracle contains wordplay that English readers can easily miss: Gaza is matched with a word for being forsaken, and Ekron with a word for being uprooted. The poetry makes the cities sound as though their names are being turned into verdicts.
The coast will become pastureland, but the oracle does not end with empty ruins. It turns toward “the remnant of the house of Judah.” They will feed there, lie down in the evening, and experience the LORD visiting them and restoring their fortunes. Judgment and restoration are deliberately placed side by side.
