Promise of Life and a Beloved Son
The letter opens with “the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus.” That phrase immediately places 2 Timothy inside the Bible’s great death-to-life story. Paul identifies his apostleship as coming by God’s will and addresses Timothy with the affection of a spiritual father: “my dearly beloved son.” Grace, mercy, and peace come from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.
Where this fits in the story: humanity’s death problem begins in Genesis 3; the Old Testament repeatedly longs for life beyond death, and the New Testament announces that life has been revealed in the risen Christ. This opening promise anticipates 1:10, where Christ “abolished death,” 2:8, where Timothy is told to remember the risen Jesus, and 4:8, where resurrection hope reaches toward “that day.”
