Baptism for the Dead, Daily Danger, and the Logic of Resurrection
Paul asks, “what shall they do which are baptized for the dead, if the dead rise not at all?” This is one of the New Testament’s most debated sentences. Paul refers to a practice known to his readers, but he neither explains its mechanics nor clearly says “we” practice it. Dozens of interpretations have been proposed, and the verse should not be used to manufacture certainty Scripture does not give.
Paul’s argumentative point is much clearer than the practice itself: behavior oriented toward the dead makes no sense if there is no resurrection. The same logic applies to Paul’s own dangers. Why risk his life for the gospel if death ends the story?
