Down to the Deep, Up from the Pit
Jonah’s descent reaches its literary bottom: deep waters, surrounding floods, seaweed, mountain roots, and the bars of the earth. Then the movement reverses—“yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption.” Where this fits in the story: Scripture repeatedly describes divine rescue as bringing a person up from the pit or Sheol. Where Scripture takes it next: Matthew’s “sign of Jonah” gives this death-and-deliverance pattern a specifically Christological horizon without requiring every detail of Jonah’s prayer to be a prediction of Jesus.
