From Cush to Nineveh: Judgment Reaches South and North
The compass keeps turning. Cush represents the south; Assyria and Nineveh the north. With Philistia to the west and Moab-Ammon to the east, the chapter creates the effect of judgment moving around Judah in every direction. No empire and no distant people lies outside the LORD’s rule.
The Nineveh oracle is especially striking because Zephaniah speaks while Assyria still exists. Nineveh is “the rejoicing city” that feels secure enough to say, “I am, and there is none beside me.” The boast is almost theological: imperial self-confidence speaks as though no rival power exists. Zephaniah answers with an image of reversal—cedar-lined grandeur exposed, animals inhabiting the ruins, and passersby hissing at the city.
