Blood-Built Glory Becomes Shame
The third and fourth woes expose an empire trying to manufacture permanence and glory through bloodshed, forced labor, humiliation, and violence. Habakkuk answers the blood-built city with a radically different future: “the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea.”
That line strongly recalls Isaiah 11:9, where the earth is filled with the knowledge of the LORD as waters cover the sea. The shared language turns Habakkuk’s local crisis into a canonical horizon: conquest will not have the last word over the earth. God’s glory will.
The passage also reverses glory into shame. The power that exposed and humiliated others must drink from the LORD’s cup itself. Violence done to people, land, city, and even Lebanon returns upon the violent.
