The fall of imperial Babylon
Revelation 18:1–3 announces Babylon’s fall through a mighty angel whose glory lights the earth. The fallen city becomes a habitation of demons and is condemned for intoxicating nations, corrupting kings, and enriching merchants through excessive luxury. The oracle develops Old Testament judgment language against proud imperial cities and applies it to Revelation’s Babylon.
Revelation 18:4–8 calls God’s people, “Come out of her, my people,” so they do not share Babylon’s sins or plagues. The command echoes prophetic calls to leave doomed Babylon while functioning morally as a summons to reject her idolatry, luxury, and injustice. Her self-glorifying claim of security is answered by sudden divine judgment.
Revelation 18:5 says Babylon’s sins have reached unto heaven and God has remembered her iniquities. The image recalls biblical stories in which accumulated human rebellion rises before God for judgment, including Babel’s heaven-reaching ambition and prophetic charges against Babylon. Revelation stresses that apparent delay does not mean divine forgetfulness.
Revelation 18:9–19 records three laments over Babylon—from kings, merchants, and seafarers—because her wealth and commercial system collapse in a single hour. The cargo list exposes an economy of extravagant consumption that even includes human lives. The mourners grieve their lost profit and splendor, revealing how deeply the world’s power and commerce were bound to Babylon.
Revelation 18:20 reverses the earthly lament by calling heaven, apostles, prophets, and saints to rejoice because God has judged Babylon for her violence against His people. The verse does not celebrate cruelty for its own sake; it presents the vindication of those whom the oppressive city persecuted and killed.
Revelation 18:20–24 answers Babylon’s splendor with final silence. A mighty angel casts a millstone into the sea as a sign of the city’s irreversible fall, and music, craft, commerce, light, and wedding celebration disappear. The closing charge explains the judgment: Babylon deceived the nations and was found responsible for the blood of prophets and saints.
Habakkuk’s woes against a blood-soaked, wealth-gathering imperial power contribute to the wider canonical pattern that culminates in Revelation’s judgment of “Babylon.”
