Paneled Houses and Bags with Holes
Haggai turns the people’s excuse back on them: if it is not time to rebuild the LORD’s house, why is it time to invest in their own houses? The famous “bag with holes” image is not a slogan about personal budgeting. It is Haggai’s picture of covenant frustration—hard work that never seems to become enough.
Where this fits in the story: Deuteronomy 28 and Leviticus 26 had already warned that covenant unfaithfulness could be answered with crop failure, scarcity, and frustrated labor. Haggai reads Judah’s present hardship through that Torah-shaped framework.
