The Holy One Comes from Teman and Paran
Habakkuk’s prayer reaches backward into Israel’s memory of God appearing from the south. God comes from Teman and the Holy One from Mount Paran; glory fills heaven and earth, mountains bow, and peoples tremble.
This belongs to a recognizable biblical theophany family. Deuteronomy 33:2, Judges 5:4–5, and Psalm 68:7–8 likewise picture YHWH coming from the Sinai/Seir/Paran region while creation reacts to his presence. Habakkuk is not inventing a new god-of-the-storm myth; he is poetically placing the coming judgment inside Israel’s remembered story of YHWH’s powerful self-revelation and deliverance.
