Rachel and Leah: Ruth Is Blessed into the House of Israel
The people and elders answer Boaz with a blessing that reaches deep into Genesis: may Ruth be like Rachel and Leah, “which two did build the house of Israel.” This is an explicit biblical connection, not a modern symbolic parallel. Bethlehem’s community interprets Ruth’s marriage by invoking the matriarchs from whom the tribes of Israel descended.
The force of the blessing is easy to miss. Ruth has repeatedly been identified as “the Moabitess.” Now the community does not merely tolerate her. They place her story beside Rachel and Leah and pray that her household will participate in the building of Israel.
