The Twelve Sons of Israel
The genealogy now narrows from the nations to Israel’s twelve sons. Their names become the names of tribes, so this short list functions like a doorway into the nation’s later story. The Chronicler is reminding a postexilic audience that scattered families and restored worshipers still belong to the same covenant people whose origins go back to Jacob. From here the attention will move especially toward Judah, because the royal line of David comes through that tribe.
