Abraham’s Wider Family and the Lines of Esau
The record widens around Abraham by naming Ishmael, Isaac, Esau, and related clans. Chronicles does not pretend that only Israel existed; it remembers the neighboring peoples as branches within the same ancestral world. At the same time, the book is moving toward the particular line that will lead through Israel, Judah, and David. The point is covenant history, not contempt for the other branches. These genealogies also help explain later relationships between Israel and peoples such as Edom.
