Strongholds, Merchants, and Officials Vanish Like Locusts
Nineveh is told to prepare every defense it can: strongholds, water for siege, brickwork, manpower, commerce, officers. Each source of confidence is then turned into a disappearing image. Fortresses drop like ripe figs. Fire and sword consume. Officials and merchants multiply like locusts and then vanish when conditions change.
The satire is important. Nahum is not saying preparation is foolish in ordinary life; he is showing the limit of preparation when a violent empire’s judgment has arrived. Military defenses, economic networks, and layers of administration can look permanent right up until the system that holds them together collapses.
