Remember Thebes: Even the Great River City Fell
This is Nahum’s clearest historical anchor. “Populous No” in the KJV is No-Amon, widely identified with Thebes in Egypt. Nahum asks Nineveh a devastating question: Are you better than Thebes, a famous city protected by water and supported by Egypt, Cush, Put, and Libya? Thebes still fell.
Assyrian evidence makes the passage startlingly concrete. Ashurbanipal’s royal inscriptions record his conquest of Thebes and the removal of people, silver, gold, luxury garments, horses, and even monumental obelisks to Assyria. Nahum’s audience could point to a major recent imperial victory and say: Nineveh itself already proved that river defenses, allies, wealth, and fame do not make a city invincible.
