The Scatterer Comes—and Jacob Will Be Restored
Nahum suddenly places the reader inside a siege. Nineveh is told to guard the fortress, watch the road, brace itself, and prepare its strength. The commands are grimly ironic: the city famous for crushing other cities is now the city under attack.
Verse 2 explains why this military scene belongs inside the biblical story. The attack on Nineveh is connected with the LORD restoring the “excellency” or majesty of Jacob after ravagers stripped the people and ruined their vine branches. Nahum does not celebrate war for its own sake; the fall of the imperial plunderer is presented as deliverance for those it plundered.
