The Plot Against the LORD Comes to an End
Nineveh’s political plotting is reframed as something larger: resistance to the LORD himself. The city may look like the center of world power, but Nahum asks what any imperial strategy can finally accomplish against God. The answer is “an utter end.”
The “wicked counsellor” should first be heard in its Assyrian setting rather than immediately turned into a distant end-times individual. Assyria had already embodied arrogant opposition to the LORD in the earlier biblical story, especially in the threats of Sennacherib’s representatives against Jerusalem. Nahum gathers that history into a verdict: power that imagines itself beyond God has misread reality.
