The Elder, the Elect Lady, and Truth That Abides
Second John opens like an actual ancient letter: sender, recipient, and greeting. The sender calls himself “the elder,” while the recipient is “the elect lady and her children.” Many interpreters understand the lady symbolically as a church and her children as its members, but a serious alternative reads her as an actual woman who led or hosted a Christian household. The text itself does not settle the question, so a responsible reading should show both readings. What is unmistakable is the letter’s repeated pairing of truth and love. The truth is not merely information; it “dwelleth in us” and will remain forever. Grace, mercy, and peace come from the Father and Jesus Christ “in truth and love,” establishing the two themes that govern the entire letter.
