We Know: The True God, Eternal Life, and the Final Warning about Idols
First John ends with a cascade of “we know” statements: the one born of God is kept from the wicked one; believers belong to God while the world lies in wickedness; the Son of God has come and given understanding so that believers may know the True One. The statement “This is the true God, and eternal life” stands at the climax of a letter saturated with Father-Son language and deserves careful grammatical and christological study. Then comes the startling final sentence: “Little children, keep yourselves from idols.” No idols have been mentioned explicitly anywhere else in the letter. The warning may summarize the whole conflict: any substitute for the true God revealed in his Son is idolatrous. The letter that began with manifested eternal life ends by demanding exclusive loyalty to the true God.
