At the potter’s house Jeremiah watches a marred vessel reworked into another form. God explicitly interprets the sign at the level of peoples and kingdoms: announced judgment may be relented from when a nation turns from evil, and announced good may be withdrawn when it turns to disobedience. Judah’s tragedy is its stubborn answer that it will follow its own plans.
