Prepare for War: The Harvest of Judgment
The nations are summoned to prepare for war, and Joel deliberately turns the famous peace image backward: plowshares become swords and pruninghooks become spears. This is not God’s final ideal for the nations; it is the grim mobilization for judgment. The scene shifts to harvest and winepress—sickle, ripe harvest, overflowing vats—images later reused powerfully in Revelation 14. Cosmic lights darken again, but Zion hears another sound: the LORD roars from Zion and becomes refuge and strength for his people. The Day of the LORD therefore holds judgment and deliverance together.
