Justice and Worship in the Land
Deuteronomy 16:18–22 is the movement “Justice and Worship in the Land.” Read it inside Moses’ final covenant instruction to Israel on the eastern side of the Jordan as the people prepare for life in the land. The section opens with: “Judges and officers shalt thou make thee in all thy gates, which the LORD thy God giveth thee, throughout thy tribes: and they shall judge the people with just judgment.” It closes with: “Neither shalt thou set thee up any image; which the LORD thy God hateth.”
Scripture also places this passage inside a wider canonical network. Jesus' warning against hypocritical judgment belongs inside a biblical world that both demands just judgment and condemns partial, malicious, or self-exempting judgment. The passage cannot mean that all moral discernment is forbidden, especially because 7:6 and 7:15-20 immediately require discernment. Habakkuk’s complaint that Torah is slack and judgment is twisted presupposes the covenant demand for judges to pursue just judgment.
