Compassion and Integrity in Daily Life
Deuteronomy 23:15–25 is the movement “Compassion and Integrity in Daily Life.” Read it inside Moses’ final covenant instruction to Israel on the eastern side of the Jordan as the people prepare for life in the land. The section opens with: “Thou shalt not deliver unto his master the servant which is escaped from his master unto thee:” It closes with: “When thou comest into the standing corn of thy neighbour, then thou mayest pluck the ears with thine hand; but thou shalt not move a sickle unto thy neighbour’s standing corn.”
Scripture also places this passage inside a wider canonical network. Jesus summarizes Torah requirements about truthful oaths and fulfillment of vows before commanding a plain yes/no integrity that makes manipulative oath systems unnecessary.
