Rest in the LORD: The Meek Will Inherit the Earth
Waiting replaces envy and anger. The psalm contrasts evildoers who will be cut off with the meek who will inherit the land and delight in abundant peace. In the Hebrew Bible, “land/earth” language here grows from Israel’s inheritance vocabulary.
Jesus closely echoes Psalm 37:11 in Matthew 5:5: “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.” This is one of the clearest places where Jesus’ Beatitudes take up Psalmic wisdom and expand its horizon. The verbal relationship is very strong even without a formal quotation formula.
