Resurrection and the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob
Matthew 22 keeps testing Jesus from every direction—kingdom invitation, Roman taxes, resurrection, Torah, and Messiah. Jesus refuses every false choice. Caesar's coin may go back to Caesar, but God's claim remains ultimate; resurrection hope is argued from God's own words to Moses; and the heart of Torah is love of God and neighbor. Then Psalm 110 pushes the Messiah question beyond 'David's son' alone.
Sadducees pose a resurrection puzzle built from levirate marriage. Jesus says they misunderstand both Scripture and God’s power, then argues from God’s self-identification at the burning bush: “I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” God is God of the living.
Where this fits in the story: Exodus 3 becomes resurrection evidence through Jesus’ inspired interpretation, a prime this study example of Scripture interpreting Scripture.
Where Scripture takes it next: the resurrection that seems debated in chapter 22 becomes historical proclamation in chapter 28.
Evidence boundary: Jesus’ statement about being “as the angels of God in heaven” concerns marriage in resurrection life; it does not say resurrected humans become angels.
Jesus quotes God’s self-identification at the burning bush—“the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob”—and uses it to answer the Sadducees about resurrection. Matthew therefore presents Exodus 3 as an explicit scriptural foundation within Jesus’ resurrection argument.
Jesus explicitly quotes God’s self-identification at the burning bush and reasons from the continuing covenant identity “God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob” toward resurrection and life. Matthew therefore presents Exodus 3 as a direct scriptural foundation in the resurrection debate.
The Sadducees cite Moses’ levirate-marriage command in Matthew before using an extreme seven-brother case to argue against resurrection; Jesus answers the mistaken resurrection premise, not the Torah law.
