David's Son and David's Lord
Matthew 22 keeps testing Jesus from every direction—kingdom invitation, Roman taxes, resurrection, Torah, and Messiah. Jesus refuses every false choice. Caesar's coin may go back to Caesar, but God's claim remains ultimate; resurrection hope is argued from God's own words to Moses; and the heart of Torah is love of God and neighbor. Then Psalm 110 pushes the Messiah question beyond 'David's son' alone.
Where this fits in the story: Matthew opened with “son of David,” while Psalm 110 joins enthronement at God’s right hand with royal-priestly authority.
Where Scripture takes it next: Psalm 110 becomes one of the New Testament’s most heavily reused messianic texts, especially in Acts and Hebrews.
Evidence boundary: debates over Psalm 110’s original historical referent belong in Deep Study, but Matthew’s own inspired use of the psalm for Messiah is explicit.
Who Jesus is — Jesus is David’s promised Son, yet Psalm 110 lets him ask how Messiah can also be David’s Lord. The New Testament repeatedly returns to this psalm to explain resurrection exaltation and Jesus at God’s right hand.
Jesus quotes David's 'The LORD said unto my Lord' and asks how the Messiah can be merely David's son if David calls him Lord, pressing beyond a simple genealogical title toward exalted messianic identity.
Jesus affirms the accepted expectation that the Christ is David’s son and then uses Psalm 110 to show that the Messiah is also David’s Lord. The scene explicitly engages Davidic messianic expectation while pressing beyond a merely genealogical understanding of the promised king.
