Jesus explicitly cites the command to honor father and mother while arguing that a human tradition must not nullify God’s command. Matthew therefore places the Decalogue above a religious practice that could excuse neglect of concrete family obligations.

Jesus quotes Torah’s severe sanction against reviling father or mother as part of His argument against traditions that undermine the command to honor parents. The citation shows that His rebuke rests on explicit written law rather than a general appeal to family values.

In Matthew 15 Jesus cites the Torah’s command to honor father and mother and also the severe sanction against cursing one’s parents, using those texts to expose a tradition that nullified family obligation. Leviticus 20:9 supplies that sanction alongside the parallel wording in Exodus 21:17, so the connection is direct Torah quotation background.

Jesus explicitly cites the command to honor father and mother while arguing that a human tradition must never be used to cancel a command God has actually given. Scripture therefore judges tradition whenever the two conflict.

Matthew explicitly presents Jesus quoting Isaiah's critique of lip-service worship and humanly taught commands, applying it to the current dispute.

Jesus quotes Isaiah 29:13 about teaching human commandments as doctrine; Colossians uses closely corresponding language when rejecting human regulations that cannot transform the flesh.

Jesus quotes the command to honor father and mother while confronting a tradition that allowed people to evade practical care for parents, making Scripture the standard by which tradition is judged.

Isaiah 29:13 → MAT 15:7-9: the later passage directly quotes Isaiah in a Christological context.
