The Cost and Urgency of Following Jesus
After the Sermon, Matthew shows Jesus' authority in action. He cleanses an excluded man, heals at a distance for a Gentile officer, bears sickness in fulfillment of Isaiah, demands costly discipleship, stills a storm, and commands demons. The repeated question is no longer only 'What does Jesus teach?' but 'Who has authority like this?'
Two would-be followers discover that discipleship is not romantic mobility with a famous teacher. The Son of Man has nowhere to lay his head, and allegiance to Jesus can outrank ordinary expectations about security and family obligation.
Where this fits in the story: prophetic calls can interrupt settled life and demand immediate obedience, though Jesus’ authority over disciples is presented with unusual directness.
Where Scripture takes it next: Matthew 10 and 16 make the cost still sharper—persecution, divided households, and the cross.
Evidence boundary: “let the dead bury their dead” is intentionally shocking. Proposed cultural reconstructions about a second-burial custom are possible but should not be presented as certain unless sourced.
Jesus calls himself 'the Son of man.' Daniel 7 is a major canonical background for Matthew's later Son-of-Man sayings, but not every occurrence necessarily carries the full Danielic meaning equally; whole-book tracking is required.
