God Restrains Laban — Pursuit, Stolen Gods, and a Dangerous Oath
Laban pursues Jacob for seven days, but before the confrontation God comes to Laban in a dream and warns him not to deal with Jacob for good or bad. The protection promised at Bethel is now visible in action: Jacob is vulnerable, but God restrains the man who claims power to hurt him. The confrontation then turns to Laban’s missing gods. Jacob, unaware that Rachel stole them, rashly declares that whoever possesses them should not live. Rachel hides the teraphim and deceives her father, so Laban’s search fails. Genesis does not praise Rachel’s theft or deception, and Jacob’s oath is made in dangerous ignorance. A later Joseph-story episode in Genesis 44 deliberately resembles this scene: an object is hidden in a family member’s possession, pursuers search the baggage, and the brothers make a rash death declaration without knowing the object has been planted with Benjamin. That later repetition turns this family habit of confident speech amid incomplete knowledge into a significant Genesis pattern.
