“Spread Your Wing”: Ruth Asks Boaz to Become the Redeemer
Ruth follows Naomi’s plan, but when Boaz wakes, she does more than wait for instructions. She identifies herself and asks him to “spread” his skirt or wing over her because he is a near kinsman. The request deliberately recalls Boaz’s own blessing in chapter 2: Ruth had come to trust under the LORD’s wings. Now she asks Boaz to embody that protection through the concrete responsibility of redemption.
This is one of Ruth’s clearest “aha” connections. The same image links divine refuge and human faithfulness. Scripture does not portray Boaz as replacing God; it shows covenant obedience becoming one means through which God’s care reaches Ruth and Naomi.
