The Prince of Persia and the Coming Message
A hand strengthens Daniel, and the messenger explains that his words were heard from the first day Daniel humbled himself. Yet the “prince of the kingdom of Persia” resisted him for twenty-one days until Michael, “one of the chief princes,” came to help.
This is one of Scripture’s clearest glimpses of conflict in the unseen realm. The “prince of Persia” is difficult to reduce to an ordinary human ruler because he contests an angelic messenger in a heavenly conflict and is paralleled by the “prince of Grecia” later in the chapter. Daniel therefore depicts spiritual powers somehow connected with earthly empires.
