A Fountain Opened for Sin—and Idols and Unclean Spirits Cut Off
The mourning of chapter 12 leads directly to cleansing: ‘In that day there shall be a fountain opened to the house of David and to the inhabitants of Jerusalem for sin and for uncleanness.’ God also promises to cut off idols, false prophetic memory, and the unclean spirit from the land. Forgiveness here is not sentiment. Cleansing removes both guilt and the polluted loyalties that produced it.
Where Scripture takes it next: the NT centers cleansing from sin on the atoning work of Christ, making Zechariah’s opened fountain a powerful canonical and historic Christian type. Yet no NT writer formally quotes Zechariah 13:1 and says ‘the fountain is Jesus’ blood.’
