The Sworn Priest Who Lives Forever to Intercede

Hebrews again emphasizes the oath in Psalm 110:4. Levitical priests entered office without that particular divine oath, but Jesus’ priesthood is sworn by God and therefore guarantees a better covenant. Mortal priests were many because death prevented them from continuing; Jesus remains forever and possesses an enduring priesthood. The result is pastoral and immediate: he is able to save completely those who draw near to God through him because he always lives to intercede for them. The permanence of the priest grounds the permanence of the help.

Sacrifice / priesthood lens: Hebrews does not present Jesus as simply the best Aaronic priest. His priesthood is tied to Psalm 110 and Melchizedek, confirmed by divine oath, made permanent by his indestructible life, and expressed in continual intercession. The contrast with the many mortal priests is part of the author’s central argument.

The Fitting High Priest and the Once-for-All Offering

Jesus is the high priest God’s people need: holy, innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners, and exalted above the heavens. Unlike ordinary high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day first for his own sins and then for the people’s. He offered once for all when he offered himself. Hebrews summarizes the contrast as law-appointed priests marked by weakness versus the oath-appointed Son made complete forever. This prepares the long sanctuary-and-sacrifice argument that follows.
