Sinking in Deep Waters and Hated without Cause
Psalm 69 begins with drowning imagery, exhaustion, and enemies who hate “without a cause.” Yet verse 5 also contains the speaker’s confession that God knows his foolishness and guilt. That detail is crucial: the entire psalm cannot simply be treated as though every first-person sentence were spoken directly by the sinless Christ.
John 15:25 explicitly applies the “hated me without a cause” language to Jesus, although Psalm 35:19 contains closely similar wording and source overlap must be acknowledged. The New Testament selects and reuses specific lines; it does not erase the psalmist’s original personal voice.
