Fear God: The Conclusion and the Coming Judgment
The final conclusion gathers the book’s tensions into two commands: fear God and keep his commandments. Human beings cannot master time, guarantee outcomes, keep wealth, defeat death, or discover all God’s work—but they can live reverently and obediently before him. The reason is judgment: God will bring every work, including hidden things, into judgment. The New Testament does not formally quote these verses as a prophecy of Jesus, but it develops the judgment theme explicitly by saying God judges secrets through Christ and that all must appear before Christ’s judgment seat. That later revelation does not cancel Ecclesiastes’ original meaning; it shows how the book’s unresolved horizon opens into the completed canon. The last word is therefore neither “nothing matters” nor “enjoy yourself because nothing lasts.” It is accountable joy before the Creator and Judge.
