Gabriel Explains the Vision
Daniel hears a human voice command, “Gabriel, make this man to understand the vision.” This is the first biblical passage to name Gabriel, who later appears in Daniel 9 and then in Luke 1 announcing the births of John the Baptist and Jesus. The same named messenger who explains God’s timetable in Daniel reappears at the opening of the Gospel story.
Gabriel explicitly identifies the ram with Media-Persia and the goat with Greece. He then describes a fierce ruler arising later, destroying the mighty and holy people, opposing the Prince of princes, and finally being broken “without hand.”
Historical and canonical layers must remain distinct. Antiochus IV provides the strongest immediate historical referent for the persecuting ruler in Daniel 8. Later Christian interpretation often sees his arrogant persecution as a pattern that anticipates final anti-God opposition. That typological extension can be responsibly discussed only after the historical referent is made clear.
