At first, darkness was upon the face of the deep. Then God said, KJV excerpt — Genesis 1:3: “Let there be light: and there was light.” God spoke, and light came into the darkness. God saw that the light was good. He called the light Day and the darkness Night.

God Creates by His Word
Genesis 1:1–5
Compare the beginnings of Genesis and John to discover what John adds about creation.
Genesis 1:1 and John 1:1 both begin 'In the beginning.' John's Gospel identifies the Word through whom all things were made.
Read the cited passages in your KJV Bible before deciding how they connect.Genesis 1:1-5 opens the whole Bible. It does not begin with people looking for God. It begins with God already there, making the world. He creates the heaven and the earth. The earth is described as without form and void, and darkness is over the deep. Then the Spirit of God moves over the waters.
God speaks: “Let there be light.” Light appears because God commands it. God sees that the light is good and separates light from darkness, naming them Day and Night. This is the first day.
These verses teach us that God is not part of creation. He made creation. His word is powerful, wise, and good. The rest of Genesis shows God bringing order and life into the world He made.

Discover why people have God-given worth, and how the Bible teaches respect.
Genesis 1:27 says people bear God's image. Genesis 9:6 uses this truth to protect human life, and James 3:9-10 applies it to our speech.
Read the cited passages in your KJV Bible before deciding how they connect.Genesis 1:26–28 tells us that God made people in His image—male and female—and gave them responsibility in His world. This means every person has worth because God made them. The Bible calls us to treat others respectfully, not as objects to use.

Big idea: People are made in God's image. That gives each person dignity, meaning a worth that should be respected. Dignity does not depend on popularity, age, money, abilities, or whether someone agrees with us. Genesis 9:6 shows the value of human life after the Flood; James 3:9 warns against speaking against people made in God's likeness.

God Creates by His Word
Genesis 1:1–5
Investigate what Genesis states directly and how John develops the creation-and-Word connection.
Genesis 1:1-5 presents God creating and speaking light. John 1:1-5, 14 makes the further inspired claim that all things were made through the Word, who became flesh.
Read the cited passages in your KJV Bible before deciding how they connect.Genesis 1:1-5 opens the Bible by declaring that God is the Creator. He made the heaven and the earth. The passage describes darkness over the deep and the Spirit of God moving upon the waters. God begins to bring order by speaking light into existence.
The central action is God’s word. “And God said” introduces His command; “and there was light” records the result. God sees the light as good, separates it from darkness, and names Day and Night.
John begins his Gospel with deliberate creation language: “In the beginning.” John says the Word was with God and was God, then says that all things were made by Him. John 1:14 says that the Word was made flesh. This creates a Strong canonical connection: John intentionally uses Genesis-opening language as he introduces Jesus Christ.
Genesis 1 does not name Jesus directly or give a complete explanation of the Trinity. State what Genesis says, then let John state what John says.

Made in God’s Image
Genesis 1:26–28
Trace God's image through creation, the value of human life, and our responsibility in speech.
Genesis 1:27 establishes human image-bearing; Genesis 9:6 applies it to the dignity of life, while James 3:9-10 challenges cursing people made in God's likeness.
Read the cited passages in your KJV Bible before deciding how they connect.Read the passage carefully. Genesis 1:26–28 states that God created humanity—male and female—in His image and entrusted people with responsibility. The text does not define the image as intelligence, appearance, status, or any single human ability. It gives all people God-given worth. Dignity means that people deserve respect because of this God-given worth, regardless of popularity or achievement.
Follow the theme through Genesis 9:6 and James 3:9–10. The first later passage addresses the seriousness of taking human life; the second applies the likeness-of-God truth to speech. They make different arguments, but both depend upon human worth before God.
